Donald Trump just had his Normandy moment

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Politicians always have to be careful when invoking World War II, because it played such a pivotal role in history, and because so many Americans made such great sacrifices in that war, and because few modern events truly compare to the worst of what went on in that war. President George H.W. Bush once took a lot of crap just for getting the date of Pearl Harbor wrong. Now Donald Trump is trying to invoke World War II, with predictable results.

Turkey has begun bombing Kurdish civilian targets, and America’s Kurdish allies are dying as a direct result of Donald Trump’s inexplicable and unconscionable decision to abruptly pull U.S. troops out of the region. It’s gotten so ugly so fast, even Republican Senators are speaking up angrily about it (while doing nothing, of course). The backlash against Trump, at a time when he’s already being impeached, is palpable. So Trump tried to fix things by saying something offensive and stupid.

Here’s what Donald Trump said today about why he’s letting the Kurds get murdered: “The Kurds are fighting for their land, just so you understand …They didn’t help us in the Second World War, they didn’t help us with Normandy.” No really, the scumbag said this. We’re not even sure where to start. This is particularly offensive, considering that in the years leading up to World War II, the Kurds were busy getting slaughtered by Turkey.

This “Normandy” moment only serves to underscore how Donald Trump has no above-board defense for what he’s doing to the Kurds. Someone, whether it be Turkey, or Putin, or one of his other puppet masters, has obviously either bribed or blackmailed Trump into letting this mass murder happen. Trump is making it worse by opening his mouth, and he’s making it even harder for his political allies to stand by him as impeachment moves forward.
