No wonder Donald Trump can’t find an attorney
The two main attorneys representing Donald Trump in his Espionage Act scandal recently quit on him. He still has some attorneys attached to the case, and even if he didn’t, that still wouldn’t allow him to magically delay his trial – no matter how many panicked posts on social media claim otherwise. But Trump is still tasked with finding attorneys who have any competence or expertise in this specific area, and can therefore help him mount a real trial defense.
Unfortunately for Trump, it appears his search is going very poorly. Last night he claimed that some of the top law firms in the nation have reached out to him and offered to represent him, but he’s turned them all down because he doesn’t need the help. No really, he said this. He’s obviously lying. Every semi-respected attorney has quit this case for good reason. There are no respectable attorneys or law firms out there who would take this case – and they’re certainly not actively reaching out to him and asking for the case.
The story here is that Trump feels compelled to make up this particular lie. Given his penchant for projection, this probably means that he’s asked a number of respectable law firms to represent him and they’ve all turned him down. The fact that he’s out there making up stories about law firms wanting the case is all the reason anyone would need to reject taking the case. Trump is a whack job who constantly makes up bizarrely false stories that never help him in any way and often hurt his case. Who would want such a client? Throw in the fact that Trump rarely pays his bills, and it’s going to make it even harder for him to find a good attorney.
All that said, Trump will find attorneys to represent him in this case, just terrible ones. He’ll have to settle for the kind of attorneys who are willing to take a case just for the publicity, even though it’ll be entirely negative publicity, knowing their client will reject or sabotage any defense strategy they might come up with, knowing he’s a lock to be convicted, and knowing he’ll probably stiff them. Such attorneys do exist. They’re just not any good.
Again, Donald Trump’s difficulties in finding quality attorneys will not delay his trial. That’s simply not a real thing, no matter how much fear mongering you might hear about this on TV or Twitter. Trump isn’t going to be magically saved by his own utter incompetence. Things only work that way in the movies. Meanwhile back in the real world, Donald Trump will be stuck with the kind of attorneys who would be willing to work for Donald Trump.
