No, Judge Cannon has NOT “delayed” Donald Trump’s trial
Judge Aileen Cannon announced today that she’s temporarily pausing the proceedings in Donald Trump’s classified documents criminal case while she makes a ruling on one of Trump’s motions. This DOES NOT mean that the trial has been “delayed.” Yet most or all major news outlets are seizing upon the ratings opportunity by running false and misleading headlines claiming that the trial has been “delayed.”
If Cannon ends up rejecting Trump’s latest motion and siding with the government, then the trial will be right back on track to take place on the date it was supposed to take place on. When something doesn’t actually delay things, it’s wrong to refer to it as a “delay.” It’s wrong. It’s false. It’s a lie. But it’s great for stirring up outrage and thus boosting ratings.
The media just got done pulling this same nonsense last month when the New York court of appeals temporarily paused Trump’s civil fraud case while hearing one of Trump’s motions. We saw endless headlines about how the trial had been “delayed.” But then the appeals court rejected Trump’s motion, and the trial started on the exact date it was originally supposed to start on.
We’ll see how Cannon ends up ruling on the motion. But in the meantime the trial has absolutely 100% not been “delayed.” That’s a false statement, no matter how many news outlets decide to put it into headlines or tweets or chyrons today.
This is the same mainstream political media that just got done insisting that there would definitely be a government shutdown, when all along it was obvious that a shutdown was unlikely, just to stir up drama and ratings. This is the same mainstream political media that falsely claimed a House committee hearing was an “impeachment inquiry” just to stir up drama and ratings. We have to stop letting the media get away with this. Trump’s trial was not delayed today, no matter how many news outlets claim it was. Facts aren’t determined by a show of hands.
