Nice try, Kevin McCarthy!

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy is a member of the joyless club. That is the group of people who, sadly for them, are in a no-win situation. The January 6 committee has subpoenaed McCarthy, and it is looking more and more like the California coward won’t show up to speak to them.

Kevin sent an 11-page letter to the committee, which was laughable on its face. The letter all but asks the committee to allow “special circumstances” (my words) for him. Kevin wants the questions and topics in advance — no doubt to prepare (or have his lawyers prepare) carefully worded responses that the coward can’t get in trouble for.

“Saving his own ass.” That should be McCarthy’s avatar. Only it’s looking like the avatar will not work. Nobody is going to mollycoddle Kevin McCarthy, although that is surely what he wants. The spokesperson for the committee, Tim Mulvey, accused McCarthy of “hiding behind debunked arguments and baseless requests for special treatment.”

Of course, that is what McCarthy is doing. How hard it must be for him! He cannot let down his messiah Donald Trump, but I assume Kevin does not want a pesky contempt of court charges against him.

What strikes me about this whole story is how weak it makes McCarthy look. Think about it. When, even once, has Kevin shown strength? Have we ever seen it? Have we seen it ANYWHERE in even one example?

I’d submit we have not. The cowardice of Kevin McCarthy is baked in. It’s a plague that lives within him, and there isn’t any easy way for McCarthy to get rid of it. And in any event, he’d have to WANT to get rid of it, which it does not appear he does.

I expect McCarthy to continue to evade and deflect. It’s his nature. It’s who he is. But in this particular case, he has no good options. And his stunning cowardice is on display for the world to see.
