Is Melania Trump the next to go?
As the investigation into Donald Trump’s Russia scandal progresses, we’re seeing quite a bit of carnage along the way. Several key former Trump advisers have agreed to plea deals involving prison time. Several key current Trump advisers are facing potential obstruction charges and worse. This is how massive criminal investigations tend to play out. But here’s something we didn’t see coming at the outset: the sheer number of Trump-Russia marriages going up in flames. Is Melania Trump the next to go?
Yesterday, Judith Giuliani filed for divorce from Rudy Giuliani, her husband of fifteen years. This comes just weeks after Vanessa Trump filed for divorce from Donald Trump Jr. Republican political operative Cheri Jacobus tweeted this view on the matter: “This means he knows Mueller has him in his crosshairs and they need to avoid asset forfeiture. Just like Don Jr and his super amicable divorce from the mother of his 5 kids.” If she’s right, and there’s good logic behind her argument, then we all know what’s coming next.
We’re potentially looking at an upcoming rash of strategically timed divorces aimed at shielding the financial assets of Trump-Russia figures from Robert Mueller. If and when Mueller finally indicts Jared Kushner on alleged financial crimes, will we see Ivanka Trump strategically file for divorce? The trouble there is that Ivanka could end up indicted as well, as Mueller is also targeting the Trump Organization, which Ivanka helped run for years.
One of the very few Trump-Russia spouses who could file for divorce and make a clean getaway is Melania Trump. She’s not known to be a subject or target of Trump-Russia or any other criminal investigation. If she can use Donald Trump’s affairs to get around the prenuptial agreement, she could take a large chunk of his assets and walk away before Robert Mueller and the State of New York inevitably begin seizing everything Donald has to his name. Now that the Trump-Russia divorces have begun, is Melania next?
