New York criminal case against Donald Trump kicks into high gear
If you’ve been waiting patiently for the Manhattan District Attorney to indict and arrest Donald Trump in New York, the emerging details reveal that your patience will be rewarded with a comprehensive criminal case that Trump will have a difficult time beating at trial.
The latest revelations come from a new Associated Press article, which confirms earlier reports that Michael Cohen is about to meet with the Manhattan DA’s office for an eighth time. The article also says that prosecutors have been using their sessions with Cohen to zero in on Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg. This is notable because prosectors now also have the cooperation of Weisselberg’s ex daughter in law.
The AP article also makes more clear than ever that prosecutors are focusing on Trump’s Seven Springs property in New York. Specifically, Trump misstated the property’s value in order to commit fraud. This investigation has its roots in Michael Cohen’s original testimony to Congress – where he accused Trump of wildly misstating the value of his properties to commit everything from tax fraud to mortgage fraud – and it’s clear that Cohen is still playing a central role in helping prosecutors.
What stands out to us is the sheer level of detail involved in the criminal case that’s being built. The DA’s office is zeroing in on specific, egregious, and easily provable instances of financial fraud, which is far more likely to lead to conviction. The case will become even more ironclad if prosecutors can find a way to flip Weisselberg.
