New twist in Matt Gaetz investigation
The DOJ still has yet to criminally charge Matt Gaetz. There have been media reports claiming that the DOJ dropped the case, but this was never verified. In the meantime, ever since Gaetz was largely responsible for ousting Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there has been buzz that House Republicans might use the House Ethics Committee as a way of taking Gaetz down.
To that end, CNN is reporting today that the House Ethics Committee has reached out to the DOJ and to the woman who was allegedly underage sex trafficked by Gaetz. This would suggest that the committee is serious about destroying Gaetz politically, and is setting him up for expulsion.
This comes at a time when the House Republican majority is razor thin to begin with – which suggests that House Republicans really don’t like Matt Gaetz and really want to get rid of him before he can cause any more turmoil from within.
Keep in mind that a House Ethics Committee report is typically the first step in ousting a House member. We saw this with George Santos. Initial efforts to expel him were unsuccessful. But once the committee released a damning report about his scandals, the House then expelled him by an overwhelming vote. So if the House Ethics Committee is serious about releasing a damning report about Gaetz, it could indeed mean his expulsion. Stay tuned.
