New twist after judge orders Donald Trump’s attorney to testify against him to the grand jury
Even as the Manhattan DA and Fulton County DA prepare to criminally indict Donald Trump, seemingly in that order, it’s easy to forget that the most serious criminal charges Trump is facing may come from DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Days ago a judge ordered that Trump’s attorney Evan Corcoran must testify to the grand jury about an incriminating phone call that took place between the two of them. It’s believed that Corcoran’s testimony will nail Trump for obstruction of justice. This is key, because indicting Trump on obstruction helps ensure a conviction at trial even if the jury ends up acquitting him on charges like espionage.
To that end, CNN is reporting that Evan Corcoran and his attorney were seen entering the courthouse in Washington DC on Monday. Yes, that’s right, Trump’s attorney now has his own attorney, in what’s become a common theme in Trump world.
It’s not yet been reported whether Corcoran was there at the courthouse to testify, or to argue the terms of his testimony, or to try some kind of appeal. But this is worth watching, because if Corcoran did testify on Monday (or testifies soon), it would mean a couple of very important things. First, it would cement that Trump is getting criminally indicted by the DOJ. Second, it would suggest that the DOJ is near the end of the indictment process. The most crucial witnesses tend to testify last, and Corcoran may be the single most important witness in the DOJ’s classified documents criminal case against Donald Trump. Stay tuned.
