Donald John Trump’s cabinet picks thus far comprise a sad cafe filled with wounded birds. Hegseth, Tulsi, Bondi, Dr. Oz—such a raggedy group of misfits has rarely been seen before. Of those nominees, there are increasing signs that one in particular may have even more issues getting confirmed than we first thought. That one is Tulsi Gabbard.

Syria has fallen. Assad has been toppled. I don’t know if you got a chance to watch it, but this writer sure did. It was a thing of beauty to watch thousands of Syrians celebrating in the streets. The joy on so many faces was beautiful to watch, a parade of newly freed voices, exultant in their utter delight.

Of course, we have yet to determine what Syria’s new leadership will look like. Amidst all this, being that I am a creature of extreme snark. allow me to remark that we must remember to send our condolences to Tulsi Gabbard.

Tulsi’s relationship with Assad was always going to be carefully scrutinized. This week, she is set to meet with Senators on Capitol Hill. Some will indeed ask her thoughts and feelings about what happned. It will be an inevitable question.

How will she answer? And what will she say about her 2017 trip to visit Bashar Assad? Inquiring minds want to know.

This could be make-or-break for Gabbard. Her nomination is already tainted by the stench of Russia, where Assad is, incidentally, thought to be right now. How will Tulsi answer these concerns? With the fall of Damascus and the release of so many political prisoners, what on earth will she say? This week, all eyes will be on Gabbad. Will she ace the test or flunk it? Stay tuned.
