Sarah Huckabee Sanders goes off the deep end about Donald Trump and the N-word
Donald Trump tweeted a lengthy tirade last night in which he insisted that he never used the N-word while he was on the set of The Apprentice, even going so far as to (probably falsely) claim that the creator of the Apprentice called him to tell him that there are no tapes of him saying it. The accusation has been around for quite some time, but Trump gave it new heft by ranting about it in such cartoonish fashion. Naturally, Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about it today. Her answer was quite stunning.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked, “Can you stand at the podium and guarantee to the American people they’ll never hear Donald Trump utter the N-word on a recording in any context?” Her response: “I can’t guarantee anything.” She looked and sounded visibly nervous, and arguably shaken, while she was delivering this answer. There are only two possibilities here.
The first possibility is that Huckabee Sanders knows there is in fact a tape of Trump saying the N-word. The second possibility is that Huckabee Sanders doesn’t have any knowledge of such a tape, but she knows that Trump is enough of a racist, she worries that there might be one. In any case, it was remarkable to see her fail to stick her neck out for Trump today, when she could easily have said something like “Yes, I guarantee that there are no tapes of Trump saying the N-word, because he doesn’t use that word.”
This is clearly not the kind of defense that Donald Trump was hoping for from his most prominent public spokesperson. Multiple major news outlets have reported that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is on her way out, and that a shortlist of potential replacements is already being crafted. Her response to the “N-word” question today can’t help her prospects, as she basically threw Trump under the bus.
