My nightmare scenario
I often get asked questions, and if nothing else it allows me to take the temperature of where everyone’s head is at. Many of the questions I get are whether I’m worried about the 2024 election being overthrown, or Trump refusing to concede, or more fake electors, that kind of thing. But I don’t sit around worrying about any of that stuff, because if we win by the margins we think we’re going to win by, the Republicans’ antics won’t matter. You can only steal close elections. If we keep working hard and win by a comfortable amount, they won’t be able to do anything about it. But I do have one nightmare scenario, and I think everyone is focusing on it far too little.
My nightmare scenario is that we’re sitting there on election night and Kamala Harris has won by a comfortable enough margin to take all the drama out of it, the Democrats have won the House majority, and the Democrats have also won the six Senate races where they’re slightly favored, but then Democratic Senator narrowly fails to win reelection in Montana.
Why is that such a nightmare? It would mean that President Kamala Harris would spend her first two years in office without being able to pass any of her legislation, and possibly without even being able to confirm any judges or justices. And all because she only has 49 Senate seats, because Jon Tester lost in Montana by a point or two. That’s my fear.
The good news is that we can do something about it. We can rally behind Jon Tester. He’s ahead in some polls and behind in others, and Cook Political Report has his race rated a toss-up, which means he has about a 50-50 chance of winning. And like I said, he’ll probably either win by a point or lose by a point. So let’s dive and donate and volunteer and make sure Jon Tester wins by a point. Election night is going to hit you very differently depending on whether President-elect Kamala Harris is going to have 50 Senators or just 49. Let’s make sure it’s 50.
