Donald Trump gives away just how devastating Robert Mueller’s testimony is going to be
When former Special Counsel Robert Mueller publicly testifies about his investigation into Donald Trump’s crimes, it won’t necessarily be a slam dunk for House Democrats, but it’ll be a devastating blow for Trump. How do we know this? At the least, Mueller will discuss what’s in his report, which includes documentation of eleven Trump felonies. But now Trump’s own team is tipping off just how much of a bodyblow they expect this to be.
The Trump 2020 campaign has announced that Donald Trump will be holding a rally in North Carolina on the night of July 17th. The media is widely interpreting this as an attempt on the campaign’s part at providing some counter programming, in the hope that the media will split its coverage between the Mueller hearing and the Trump rally. But this is a fundamental misinterpretation, for two reasons.
First, Trump’s campaign rallies no longer have any impact on the news cycle. MSNBC and CNN don’t air his deranged and repetitive speeches, and even Fox News no longer seems sure what to do with the rallies. Trump could arguably do more counter programming just by posting a particularly deranged tweet that same day about a controversial issue, all without leaving the house. Second, if this all were about impacting the day’s media cycle, Trump would be holding it the night before Mueller’s testimony, not half a day after Mueller testifies.
No, this rally is about something different altogether. This is about Donald Trump trying to give himself something to look forward to on the night of July 17th, after he spends all day taking punches from Robert Mueller. This rally is about blowing off steam. It gives away that Trump expects Mueller’s testimony to be particularly devastating.
