More good news for the Democrats in 2024

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

As the Republican Party becomes ever more extremist and dangerous, and the Democratic Party becomes more savvy about down ballot races, the Democrats have managed to make significant gains in a number of state legislatures. That includes Michigan, where the Democrats have taken majority control of the state House and state Senate, even though the districts have been gerrymandered for some time.

But now the federal courts have struck down the Michigan maps for being racially unbalanced, and ordered that they be redrawn. This will give Black voters in Michigan the proper representation in state government. It will also very likely result in the Democrats gaining more seats in the Michigan state legislature in 2024.

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that racial gerrymandering was unconstitutional, this applied not just to U.S. House districts, but also to state legislature districts. We’ve already seen the courts begin to forcibly redraw the 2024 U.S. House maps in states like Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. Now we’re seeing that process filtering down to state legislatures. We’re going to see even more of this going forward.

Of course elections don’t win themselves, even when maps are fair. We’ll still have to put in the work when it comes to the most competitive 2024 races, up and down the ballot. But a ruling like this means that when we put in that work, we’ll get results that are commensurate with the work we’ve put in. Let’s go win it all!
