At this point Mitt Romney appears to only still exist to remind us that Republicans are capable of saying things in a stately manner while saying absolutely nothing of meaning, merit or morality. Today, Romney reminded us just how much of a fence-straddling coward he can truly be.

Last night Donald Trump said one racist thing after another about Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, in order to fire up his racist supporters in the audience. Eventually they began chanting “send her back” to signify that they want her deported, even though she’s a United States citizen. It was little more than a take on Trump’s own “go back” remarks earlier in the week. But the chant played so poorly, Trump told the media today that he disagreed with it.

In the real world, everyone immediately saw this as nothing more than Trump trying to cover his backside after he took his racism so far that even his own party leaders were uncomfortable with how it might impact their electability. But the mainstream media, which sometimes operates in a bubble apart from reality, announced that Trump had “disavowed” the chant. This opened the door for Mitt Romney to step up.

The trouble for Romney is that he never actually steps up. Instead of saying something meaningful or taking a stand, he posted this tweet: “The chants at last night’s rally were offensive, and I’m glad the President has disavowed them.” Everyone quickly piled on, to the point that the tweet got roughly three times as many negative comments as it got likes, never a good sign. If Mitt Romney has this little to say, he should resign.
