Mitt Romney blows it again

Back in 2012, Mitt Romney revealed himself to be tone-deaf on most American issues, financially corrupt, and unable to stop embarrassing himself. There was only one thing Romney got right in that entire campaign, which was when he said that Russia was an existential threat to the United States, at a time when few people on either side of the aisle were talking that way. Well, now Romney just blew that too.

Now that Donald Trump has crapped all over America in every way possible, a non-psychotic, non-traitorous criminal like Mitt Romney has a chance to look good in comparison. In fact Romney was able to easily make a comeback and land himself a Senate seat, just by not being as awful as Trump. Romney initially took a big public swing at Trump on racism and immigration, but just one day later, Romney caved and signed onto Trump’s racist border wall. Now Romney has done something even weirder.

Yesterday the Senate held a vote on whether to stop Donald Trump’s attempt at easing sanctions against Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. This is one of the Kremlin thugs who helped rig the election in Trump’s favor, so a guy like Mitt Romney – who foresaw America’s Kremlin problem seven years ago – should have been eager to defy Trump on this, right?

Actually, no. Even though several Republican Senators joined with the Democrats in voting to stand up to Trump and Russia, Mitt Romney wasn’t among them. Instead Romney voted to ease sanctions on Deripaska, just like Trump wanted, just like Putin wanted. So much for Romney’s long-standing position that Putin was America’s biggest threat. In fact this is enough to ask if perhaps the Kremlin has gotten to Romney. If nothing else, considering how overwhelmingly corrupt Romney is, it can’t be difficult to buy him off.
