Mitch McConnell hits the panic button
Mitch McConnell was already going into the 2020 election holding a bad hand. Donald Trump’s toxic unpopularity was threatening to cost McConnell his Senate majority, and McConnell’s own toxic unpopularity was threatening to cost him his own seat. But now that Trump has flubbed a pandemic with deadly consequences, McConnell is revealing just how worried he is about his own prospects.
Mitch McConnell appeared on the Hugh Hewitt propaganda show today and asserted that Donald Trump only screwed up the coronavirus crisis response because Democrats distracted Trump with impeachment. By now we expect McConnell to be this dishonest and this evil. What stands out here is how desperate McConnell is.
This is not a winning argument for Mitch McConnell. He can repeat it all he wants, but polls show that the majority of Americans think Donald Trump was guilty in his impeachment trial, so he’s not going to convince a majority of people that impeachment shouldn’t have happened.
More to the point, by making the argument that Donald Trump only screwed up the coronavirus response because he was being impeached, Mitch McConnell is flat out admitting that Trump screwed up the coronavirus response. This is a big deal. McConnell is already giving up any hope that Trump’s response will end up being seen favorably.
