Even as other Republican political figures are falling in line with Donald Trump’s farce of a 2024 “campaign,” Trump’s own former running mate Mike Pence announced today that he will not endorse Trump in 2024 no matter what. So why is Pence sticking it to Trump like this?

A lot of observers still don’t understand why Pence does what he does. He’s never been a popular politician at any point in his career. But he’s been able to stick around for decades by knowing when to jump on (or jump off) any given political trend. And by sticking around for decades, Pence has been able to line his pockets with book deals, the speaker circuit, you name it.

In fact Pence only ran his own 2024 presidential campaign for the financial opportunities that it would open up for him. Every move Pence makes, it’s because he thinks it’ll keep him in the game and thus keep the money coming in. So if Pence is ruling out endorsing Trump in 2024, it’s because Pence thinks that there’s more of a future for right wing politicians who are refusing to get on board with the Trump 2024 debacle.

In other words, Mike Pence is now firmly betting against Donald Trump. Pence is signaling that he expects Trump to be taken down by his criminal trials, by the voters, by his own senility, and whatever else Trump is up against. Pence has never known how to become popular with voters, but he’s been pretty adept at figuring out which way the wind is blowing. So it’s notable that Pence is now placing most of his chips on the premise that Trump and his movement are going down.
