If Donald Trump’s violent racist rhetoric leading up to the events of this week was reckless and reprehensible, then his response to the events has been nothing short of monstrous and criminal. Trump is making a point of attacking specifically Democrats who were nearly assassinated this week. He’s taking his anti-American rhetoric to a whole new level in general. As it turns out, he’s not the only one.

Mike Pence likes to speak in a drab and subdued manner, in order to hide the fact that his rhetoric and beliefs are in some ways even more extremist than those of Donald Trump. Pence is the kind of extreme sexist who won’t hold a meeting alone with a female official. He’s the kind of bigot who thinks gays should have no rights at all. Now Pence is giving a full throated defense of Donald Trump’s monstrous rhetoric.

Mike Pence is telling NBC News that Donald Trump’s violent and racist rhetoric is somehow simply his style. No really, he said that. Pence said “Everyone has their own style, and frankly, people on both sides of the aisle use strong language about our political differences.” Wait, so which Democratic Party leaders have been calling for violence and making blatantly bigoted remarks? That’s right, none of them.

Donald Trump’s violent rhetoric is literally criminal. By promoting violence in general, and then falsely accusing specific political adversaries of committing imaginary crimes, Trump is committing felony incitement to violence. If he were anyone else, he’d have been indicted for it by now. By flat out lying about Trump’s violent rhetoric, Pence is participating in that criminal conspiracy. More importantly, Pence is reminding us that he’s just as much of a monster as Trump is. Lock them both up.
