Mike Pence just threw Donald Trump under the bus

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. Over the past few days a number of prominent Republicans including Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, and Mick Mulvaney have decided to throw Donald Trump under the bus with regard to his Espionage Act indictment. And why wouldn’t they? Trump is on his way down, everyone is starting to see it, and they’re selfishly distancing themselves from his implosion.

Now even Mike Pence is getting in on the action. He said this to the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board about Trump’s classified documents indictment: “These are very serious allegations. And I can’t defend what is alleged. But the President is entitled to his day in court, he’s entitled to bring a defense, and I want to reserve judgment until he has the opportunity to respond.”

Okay, so Pence – ever the calculated creep – is giving himself some wiggle room. But Pence knows that Trump isn’t going to magically pull a viable or believable defense out of his backside. Pence’s “I can’t defend” characterization is his way of saying “bye bye Trump, enjoy prison, nice knowing you.”

You don’t have to give Mike Pence or any of these other Republicans any credit for belatedly and selfishly turning against Trump. But it sure is a benchmark for where things are heading. Nearly the entire media and pundit class spent all that time insisting that “Republicans will never turn against Trump no matter what.” And yet now that it selfishly suits them, national Republican figures are tripping over each other to throw Trump under the bus. There will be more of them, as Trump’s situation grows even darker.
