Michael Flynn just volunteered to be the biggest loser of the January 6th probe
My expectation all along has been that January 6th witnesses without existing criminal liability will cooperate with the committee, while those facing criminal liability will opt for a contempt charge instead. Now that they can all see they really will be arrested for contempt, we’ll see how it plays out.
The days of people being willing to get arrested just to protect Trump are likely over, now that he can’t get them off the hook. So the witnesses who can avoid prison simply by selling Trump out, will lean toward doing so.
But if a witness participated in 1/6 criminality (or related crimes such as election tampering etc), they might prefer a short prison sentence for contempt, rather than testify and risk incriminating themselves into ending up with a lengthy prison sentence for their underlying crimes.
Interestingly, Michael Flynn is now strongly hinting that he’ll testify, and of course he has a metric ton of criminal liability. But he’s also completely unhinged and loves to run his mouth at his own expense. So maybe he’s stupid and/or insane enough to testify and incriminate himself.
Then again, when someone is a constant liar, it’s wise to never take him at his word. Michael Flynn could be full of it about being willing to testify. But one can hope. That motormouth idiot could unwittingly do the 1/6 committee’s entire job for them – and take himself down in the process. At this point Flynn is volunteering to be the biggest 1/6 loser of all.
