Michael Cohen testified for the prosecution today in Donald Trump’s New York civil fraud trial. If you were expecting shocking revelations on the witness stand or someone busting through the courtroom doors holding surprise evidence, now is a good time for a reminder that things only work that way in the movies.

In the real world, rarely does any witness give testimony that at least one side didn’t already know was coming. The gist of what you’re going to hear from a witness for the prosecution like Cohen is already going to be in the indictment text. But Cohen’s testimony today was nonetheless devastating for Trump.

Cohen testified today that Trump picked false valuation numbers and then told Cohen to work backwards in order to fraudulently justify those numbers. This may sound rather clinical, but it’s exactly the kind of testimony that causes a defendant to lose. It’s even more evidence that Donald Trump himself orchestrated the falsification of his net worth in order to fraudulently obtain loans and such. And that’s going to cost Trump everything.
