Merrick Garland tells Jim Jordan to shove it

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

House Oversight Committee Chair Jim Jordan just keeps trying to abuse his position to give Donald Trump an advantage in the DOJ’s criminal case against Trump. The trouble is, it’s not possible for Jordan to do that.

Jordan keeps asking Merrick Garland and his DOJ for more details on the case. But as expected, the DOJ is saying no. Garland’s DOJ has sent Jordan a letter explaining that it doesn’t comment on ongoing criminal investigations. As I’m fond of pointing out, the DOJ really doesn’t need to use any more words than “ongoing criminal investigations” to shut all of this down.

There’s nothing at all that Jordan can do to force the DOJ to provide any more information. Jordan can force Garland to testify in open or closed hearings, but Garland can still simply respond to every question by saying that the DOJ doesn’t comment on ongoing criminal investigations. And while Jordan may try to make noise by threatening to impeach Garland, even if there were enough House Republican votes for impeachment, there would never be enough Senate votes for removal. Nor can Jordan “defund” the DOJ or the Special Counsel probe, no matter how many times he makes that threat.
