Donald Trump’s stunning G7 mental lapse
Last night Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced to Radio Free Europe that all seven G7 leaders had agreed to the official summit communique, a lengthy resolution which – among other things – condemned Russia. This obviously included Donald Trump. Less than an hour later, Trump jumped on Twitter to call Trudeau a liar, and announced that he was rejecting it. This means that Trump agreed to a statement and then insisted that it hadn’t happened. Wait a minute – this is stunning.
There are only a few possible explanations here, each more jarring than the next. One is that Donald Trump signed off on the lengthy communique without reading it, and therefore wasn’t aware that it contained a condemnation of Russia. This seems entirely possible, considering his reputation for not wanting to read anything longer than a page. Another possibility is that he signed off on it but doesn’t remember signing it, because his cognitive abilities are that far gone. Then there’s the possibility that he knows what he signed off on, he remembers having done it, he’s lying about it simply because lying is second nature to him, and he’s too stupid to realize how bad this makes him look.
Here’s the trouble: when you sign something, your signature is still there even if you go out and claim you never signed it. Based on Trudeau’s statement, it sounds like Trump may have actually signed the thing. If so, good luck dancing his way around that one, once his signature is produced. Even if there is no signature, there are a room full of people who can confirm that he agreed to the communique.
So what does this make Donald Trump? A flip flopper? A lazy rube? A senile dotard? A pathological liar? All of the above? Only the most incompetent negotiator agrees to a deal, leaves the table, and then after it’s too late to continue negotiating anything, says “Nah, I don’t agree to any of it.” This isn’t some four dimensional chess tactic on Trump’s part. He’s just flailing as he continues to sink. This might be his dumbest moment yet.
