As everything unravels, Donald Trump melts down behind the scenes
Donald Trump, already the most unpopular first-year U.S. President in the history of polling, is about to celebrate the one year anniversary of his presidency with a government shutdown of his own making. Things began spiraling toward a shutdown when he threw a profane racist tantrum last week. Now that things are truly unraveling and it’s all about to fall on his head, Trump is reportedly melting down behind the scenes.
MSNBC host Joy Reid summed it up this way: “Not shocking news, but a bit of color: GOP source tells me Trump is furious about the shutdown, which is messing up his anniversary and keeping him from going to Mar-a-Lago for his party.” Trump had been planning to travel to his Florida golf resort this weekend in order to hold a “gala” which was little more than a front for raising money for his imaginary 2020 reelection campaign so he can redirect the money to himself.
This means that not only is the government shutdown a political disaster for Trump, it’s also going to end up costing him money personally. Polls show that Americans are largely blaming Trump and his Republican Party for the impending shutdown, despite Trump’s efforts to somehow pin the blame on the Democratic minority in Congress. At one point Trump and the GOP briefly had “SchumerShutdown” trending on Twitter, in reference to Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. But that was quickly replaced by “TrumpShutdown” which has since become the very top trending topic on Twitter.
Meanwhile, even as Donald Trump is melting down behind the scenes as this all goes wrong for him, he’s also ranting in public. Trump tweeted “Not looking good for our great Military or Safety & Security on the very dangerous Southern Border. Dems want a Shutdown in order to help diminish the great success of the Tax Cuts, and what they are doing for our booming economy.” Nice try. This is all on Trump and he knows it.
