In a sign of just how rattled Donald Trump may be over his worsening whistleblower scandal, it took him until nearly 11:00 this morning to finally post his first tweet of the day, addressing last night’s bombshell report that the scandal involved him making a disturbing promise to (likely) Vladimir Putin. In a more clear sign of how rattled Trump is, once he finally got started, he went completely off the deep end about it.

For reference, here’s what Trump tweeted: “Another Fake News story out there – It never ends! Virtually anytime I speak on the phone to a foreign leader, I understand that there may be many people listening from various U.S. agencies, not to mention those from the other country itself. No problem! …Knowing all of this, is anybody dumb enough to believe that I would say something inappropriate with a foreign leader while on such a potentially “heavily populated” call. I would only do what is right anyway, and only do good for the USA!”

Wait a minute here. His defense is that he couldn’t have said any such thing on the phone because someone may have heard it and ratted him out. And yet the story is that someone did hear him say it, and did rat him out. That’s like robbing a bank, getting caught on the security camera, and then claiming that you couldn’t have robbed the bank because you knew that you’d have gotten caught on the security camera. It’s an impressive level of gibberish even by Trumpian standards.

Then four minutes later, Donald Trump decided to make clear to everyone that he’s really rattled by tweeting the words “Presidential Harassment!” Strangely, he didn’t bother to use all capital letters with this phrase, as he’s been known to do. Maybe he’s slipping. In any case, this scandal is as big as you think it is.
