To give you an idea of how Republican nominee Ron DeSantis fared in last night’s Florida Governor debate, his detractors on social media were largely stunned that he performed even worse than they were hoping for, and his supporters didn’t seem to know what to say. DeSantis came off as unprepared, in over his head, and not in control of his emotions, even as Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum confidently bulldozed him. Suffice it to say that this didn’t sit well with Donald Trump.

Trump more or less handpicked his House GOP ally Ron DeSantis to be the Republican nominee in this race for Governor, meaning that Trump has a lot riding on how this goes. The average of polls suggests that Andrew Gillum is up by three to four points, and Gillum seemed to have the momentum coming into the debate. Maybe that’s why DeSantis seemed so inept and shaken this evening. Or maybe Trump really is just that bad at picking candidates.

In any case, after Gillum was done mopping the floor with DeSantis, Donald Trump posted this surreal tweet: “Ron DeSantis had a great debate victory tonight against Andrew Gillum, a mayor who presides over one of the worst run, and most corrupt, cities in Florida. Ron will build on the great job done by Governor Rick Scott. Gillum will make Florida the next Venezuela!”

That’s right, the “President” of the United States is publicly attacking a major U.S. city (Tallahassee) in the hope of scoring cheap political points. In addition, the comparisons between Florida and Venezuela don’t even make sense, beyond Donald Trump’s random false insistence that every Democratic politician is now a Venezuela-style socialist. Trump’s candidate got his butt whooped last night, and now Trump is grasping at straws accordingly.
