Donald Trump has berserk meltdown about impeachment, after Robert Mueller basically tells the House to impeach him
This morning Robert Mueller made a point of emphasizing that he wasn’t legally allowed to criminally charge Donald Trump for any crimes due to a DOJ policy of not indicting a sitting president, and that Trump would need to be charged by other means. Mueller didn’t use the word “impeachment” but he was essentially demanding that the impeachment process begin. Trump apparently got the message eventually.
Trump initially responded to Mueller’s speech by falsely claiming that Mueller had just exonerated him again. Of course no one outside Trump’s base is buying that punchline, so nine hours later, Trump took a different tack: he acknowledged that Mueller just moved the needle much closer to his impeachment.
Donald Trump posted this surreal tweet this evening: “How do you impeach a Republican President for a crime that was committed by the Democrats? WITCH-HUNT!” This is classic Trump projection on display, but it doesn’t even make sense. Trump seems to understand that he’s going down for felony obstruction of justice, more so than any other crime. So is he accusing the Democrats of having committed obstruction of justice? Even he doesn’t appear to understand what he’s yelling at this point.
Meanwhile, regardless of what Nancy Pelosi or Jerry Nadler or anyone else said today, they know the reality is that impeachment will end up happening. They already knew this before Robert Mueller opened his mouth today. They’ve obviously been stalling for time while something bigger comes together behind the scenes, though it’s never been fully clear what it is they’ve been cooking up. Whatever the plan is, Mueller’s statement today puts that plan a whole lot closer to seeing the light of day. The clock is now ticking more quickly than ever.
