House Republican George Santos is now in the process of being expelled, in the wake of a damning report from the Republican-controlled House Ethics Committee. Matt Gaetz has to be worried that he could be the next to be on the receiving end of such a report, so it’s not surprising that he’s speaking out emphatically today against Santos’ expulsion. But things are getting more than a little weird.

Gaetz is trying desperately to push back against the idea of expelling House members on the basis of ethics committee recommendations, while also trying to avoid actually defending Santos. The balancing act has gotten so tricky that Gaetz ended up saying “I rise not to defend George Santos, whoever he is…” before going on to reference the botox treatment that Santos improperly paid for with campaign funds.

This whole thing is just getting bizarre. But with House Republicans now trying to make their problems go away by shoving George Santos out the back door (he’ll likely be expelled by the end of the week), Matt Gaetz is clearly worried that he might be next. The Republican House continues to collapse in upon itself.
