If Donald Trump is the king of self sabotage, then Mark Meadows is the prince of self sabotage. He gave up a safe House seat for a short lived tenure in the Trump White House that got him indicted. He turned over evidence against himself to the January 6th Committee and then changed his mind and couldn’t get it back. And he testified to Jack Smith’s grand jury under immunity, apparently without cutting an overall immunity deal to protect himself.

But even with Meadows continuing to screw himself, he’s managed to screw Trump even more. Meadows’ testimony against Trump to the grand jury is a damning insider’s view to Trump’s crimes. And Chris Christie, who can’t be trusted overall but is sincere in his current desire to take Trump down, is accurately pointing out that Meadows’s testimony alone will put Trump in prison.

It’s part of why it can’t be assumed that Donald Trump will be the 2024 Republican nominee. He’s only polling at about 50% in the Republican primary. His base makes up perhaps one-third of Republican primary voters. And now he’s a lock for conviction and prison, thanks to things like Meadows’ testimony. We have to remain vigilant about the possibility that Trump could fall by the wayside and some other terrible choice could end up being the Republican nominee instead. We must prepare for all possibilities, instead of just passively assuming that Trump will be the nominee no matter what.
