At this point most House Republicans seem content to stick with Mike Johnson as their Speaker, whether they like him or not, simply because trying to replace him would be too difficult – and too risky. House Democrats don’t seem much interested in ousting Mike Johnson either, unless it’s a scenario in which they can replace him with Hakeem Jeffries.

Then there’s Marjorie Taylor Greene, who only cares about causing trouble so she can show off for the rural anti-government types in her district. Greene finally made her long-threatened motion to vacate the chair this afternoon, and she promptly got booed for it:

So what happens now? Because Republicans only have a super narrow majority, they do not have the votes to keep Johnson in the Speaker chair. However, some House Democrats have indicated that they will likely protect Johnson from being removed by Greene. It’s entirely possible that this is the deal Democrats worked out with Johnson in order to get Ukraine funding passed.

Keep in mind that even if Democrats protect Mike Johnson at this time, House Republicans will still lose the majority if one or two more of their members resign between now and November. So it’s possible that Democrats will have gotten Ukraine funding out of Mike Johnson, and will end up being rid of him soon anyway.

In any case, if we put in the work in the most competitive House races between now and November, the Democrats will win the House majority outright, and Hakeem Jeffries will definitely become Speaker. UPDATE: the House shut down Greene’s motion to vacate moments after she initiated.
