Looks like Trump is about to do something really stupid
Earlier this week a single new poll was released which claimed that Donald Trump’s approval had climbed up into the low forties, which is still a terribly low number for a US President in his first hundred days. At the time I pointed out that this was an outlier poll, and that all the other polls had Trump even lower. Now polling experts like Harry Enten are acknowledging that Trump is indeed historically unpopular. It looks like he’s about to become even more unpopular.
One of the (many) reasons for Trump’s unpopularity is that he keeps announcing tariffs upon tariffs against our most important trade partners. The plunging stock market says that Wall Street has given up on Trump’s economy already, and the plunging consumer confidence index says that the general public has given up on Trump’s economy. No US President has ever fallen this far this fast out of the gate. So what’s Trump doing? Digging himself an even deeper hole.
Trump posted this to social media: “The Fed would be MUCH better off CUTTING RATES as U.S.Tariffs start to transition (ease!) their way into the economy. Do the right thing. April 2nd is Liberation Day in America!!!”
It’s unclear what this does or doesn’t signify. Trump appears to be so far removed from his own administration’s decision making process that half of his tariff announcements don’t even end up correlating to anything that’s happening (at one point he even got confused and announced tariffs against Russia). But each time Trump opens his mouth about the economy, it makes things even worse. So whatever Trump thinks he’s about to do on April 2nd, it’ll likely drive his numbers even lower.
The shame of it all continues to be that each time Trump does something stupid and harmful that makes him even more unpopular and further erodes his political muscle, innocent people get hurt in the process. It’s why we have to keep fighting to protect everyone’s rights and well being while this Trump nightmare plays out. But if we keep fighting, we’re going to win a number of these battles. We can prevail, and we must, and we will.
