Liz Cheney throws down the gauntlet
People have such complicated feelings towards Liz Cheney. On the one hand, she has been fantastic in her work on the January 6 committee. On the other hand, she is, at heart, a Republican. One cannot forget her VERY conservative positions on almost every issue, including abortion.
Yes, Cheney is a Republican through and through. For now. I say that because Cheney came out with a rather stunning statement. Speaking to the Texas Tribune, Cheney said she’d do everything in her power to make sure Donald Trump is not the 2024 Presidential nominee.
Now he won’t be. Donald Trump will likely have long been indicted by then. But I believe, on the one hand, Cheney knows that. It is what ELSE she said that is interesting. She said she’d leave the GOP if Trump were the nominee.
That is a stunning statement and the first time I can think of where Cheney actually spoke about no longer being a Republican. And it makes one wonder. Because although Trump will not be on the ballot in 2024, another Republican will. And that Republican is likely to be an election denier.
So it stands to reason that if a “mini Trump” snags the nomination, Cheney would likely leave the party because this unknown person’s policies would be interchangeable with Trump’s, including about the 2020 election.
But that is not all. In other comments that are perhaps more stunning than the ones I’ve already written about, Cheney says she will campaign FOR Democrats. Cheney said she’d stump for any Democrat running against an election denier.
That’s just shocking. But perhaps Liz has had enough of her fellow Republicans who, after all, have become no more than a pathetic cult.
Do I think she would ever join up with the Democrats? I would never say never. It’s unlikely, but a year ago, the thought of Liz Cheney on the campaign trail for Democrats was also unlikely. In politics, things change rapidly. One never knows what’s around the corner. And it looks like Cheney most definitely has some surprises in store for us all.
