The real reason Donald Trump suddenly has such a big Lisa Murkowski problem

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski voted to acquit Donald Trump when she knew he was unfit and deranged, because she’s a selfish opportunist, and at the time she felt that acquitting him was the best move for her own career. But now that the wind is blowing in a different direction, she’s singing a different tune.

Reporters asked Murkowski today about General James Mattis’ assertion that Donald Trump is unfit and deranged. Murkowski said that she agrees with Mattis, and she’s unsure if she’ll support Trump in the election. Murkowski deserves zero points for this. She had her chance to take a bold stand against Trump during impeachment, and she refused. But this isn’t about her. While Murkowski is a bad Senator and a bad person, an opportunist like her makes a great barometer for where things are headed.

Murkowski has survived in the Senate for all these years, despite being pretty worthless, simply because she knows which way the wind is about to start blowing. She’s now clearly decided that Trump is likely to take a fall, and she selfishly wants to be seen as being on the correct side of that.

Lisa Murkowski isn’t going to actually do anything to get rid of Trump, because opportunists like her don’t like to do the dirty work themselves. But this isn’t about her. She’s terrible; we already know that. This is about Donald Trump. And it’s a reminder that the further Trump’s numbers fall, the more we’ll see the opportunists within the GOP incrementally backing away from Trump. It blows away the simplistic notion that the GOP will stick with Trump “no matter what.”
