Lindsey Graham just took things to a whole new low
Donald Trump has once again been accused of rape, this time by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll. She joins more than twenty other women who have publicly accused Trump of rape or sexual assault. Trump is denying the accusation, and the nature of his denial is predictably repugnant. But now his pal Lindsey Graham has decided that he has something to say about it – and Graham has taken things to a whole new low.
Trump is insisting that he couldn’t have raped Carroll because “she’s not my type” – a horrifying denial which seems to imply that he thinks he’s justified in raping women who are his type. But we expect this kind of response from Trump, right? After all, he’s a serial sexual assaulter who’s famously been caught giddily confessing to these crimes on tape. That brings us to Lindsey Graham.
Here’s how Lindsey Graham responded to the latest rape accusation against Donald Trump: “He’s denied it. That’s all I needed to hear.” No really, that’s what he said. What fresh hell is this? We’ve got a sitting United States Senator admitting that he doesn’t care about the accusations, facts, or evidence involved – all he cares about is that his friend Trump is denying it. We’re talking about the President of the United States here. He’s supposed to be held to a higher standard, not a lower one – or in this case a total lack of a standard.
Of course this is nothing new for Lindsey Graham. We all watched him have a complete meltdown in defense of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, when he was accused of being a serial sexual assaulter. To this day, Graham’s profile picture on Twitter is a photo of himself and Kavanaugh. Graham appears to have decided that his job as U.S. Senator is to automatically defend all men (or perhaps all Republican men) against all accusations from women, no matter how credible. If Graham is only in office to represent accused rapists, then he’s obviously no longer representing most of the people who elected him – and he must immediately resign.
