Lindsey Graham goes running to Nancy Pelosi for help
No one is sure why Republican Senator Lindsey Graham does the things he does these days – least of all Graham, who has become the political equivalent of the guy who just stepped off the tilt-a-whirl and is too amped up and dizzy to remember what he’s doing. Graham is still cartoonishly defending Donald Trump against impeachment. But Graham is so vehemently opposed to Trump’s Syria debacle, he’s running to Nancy Pelosi for help to stop Trump. No, really.
Lindsey Graham is so desperate to stop Donald Trump’s abandonment of the U.S.-allied Kurds in Syria, he went to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi today for help on the kind of bipartisan legislation that can get through the Democratic House and the Republican Senate. Regardless of why Graham is doing his latest about-face, Pelosi is taking him up on the offer.
Nancy Pelosi tweeted this: “Pleased to have a conversation with Senator Lindsey Graham this morning. Our first order of business was to agree that we must have a bipartisan, bicameral joint resolution to overturn the President’s dangerous decision in Syria immediately. Next, we must put together the strongest bipartisan, bicameral sanctions package similar to the bipartisan bill the House is advancing. As we find ourselves in a situation where the President gave a green light to the Turks to bomb and effectively unleashed ISIS, we must have a stronger sanctions package than what the White House is suggesting.”
Donald Trump is so intent on getting the Kurds murdered, he clearly doesn’t care if doing so ends up finishing off what’s left of his presidency – so he would likely veto any reasonable legislation on the matter. The question becomes whether Pelosi and Graham can put together the kind of bipartisan legislation that will get enough votes to be veto-proof.
