South Carolina held its primary election contest on Tuesday. Democratic candidate Jaime Harrison is very popular and he ran unopposed in the primary, so it’s no surprise that he officially became the Democratic nominee. Then there’s the matter of the Republican primary race, and a certain guy named Lindsey Graham.

Don’t get too excited; Lindsey Graham didn’t lose last night. But here’s the thing. He only got about 67% of the vote in the Republican primary race. That’s exceptionally low for an incumbent Senator. And it’s not as if he was merely up against some uniquely popular challenger. The other thirty-three percent of the vote was split three ways, among Republican candidates you’ve never heard of.

This is a bad sign for Lindsey Graham in the general election. It means that he doesn’t even have strong support within his own party in South Carolina; one third of Republican primary voters tried to replace him on Tuesday. This means Graham is particularly vulnerable heading into a general election in which the Democrats in South Carolina are highly motivated to get rid of him, and strongly united behind Jaime Harrison. Graham is in huge trouble.
