Donald Trump is losing the battle over impeachment so badly, he’s now resorting to the laugh-out-loud argument that he hasn’t actually been impeached. Next he’ll be arguing that Nancy Pelosi doesn’t exist, or some even more deranged fantasy. Because Trump’s defense strategy now consists of nothing but unhinged delusion, he’s naturally trotting out a surrogate whose entire life has become unhinged delusion: Lindsey Graham.

Lindsey Graham, the once-respected Republican Senator who now behaves like someone who needs to be institutionalized, took to the airwaves on Sunday to try to make Donald Trump feel better about the demise of his presidency. Nancy Pelosi is holding onto the articles of impeachment to see what kind of concessions she can get from Mitch McConnell when it comes to a fair Senate impeachment trial. But Graham used his Fox Business appearance today to push the laughable notion that Pelosi is sitting on the articles of impeachment because she knows they’re a sham, and she’s afraid the Senate trial will somehow expose that impeachment didn’t happen, or something.

This was expected. Again, these surrogate appearances aren’t about trying to change any minds out there, or salvage Trump’s disastrous 2020 prospects. Instead, Graham and the other minstrels are putting on a performance for Trump himself, who sits in bed and watches this crap, and thinks it means he’s somehow not in trouble.

The problem is that Lindsey Graham is so far removed from mental competence, he can no longer put a sentence together without saying something like what he said this morning: “Impeachment is a dead cat, stop playing with it, bury it.” And thus we’ve reached the point where a Republican Senator is on live television talking about playing with a dead cat. If this is the best “defense” that Trump can come up with, he might as well just resign.
