Donald Trump can’t keep up with his own lies

If we needed any more reminders that Donald Trump should never be believed, this past week certainly provided a few new ones. On Friday, Trump was asked by a reporter how he would be spending Father’s Day. Trump responded by saying “Work. I’m going to work.” Just two days later, on Father’s Day, Trump was spotted golfing at his Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia. Through multiple tweets, as well as anytime a reporter’s microphone was in speaking distance, Trump repeatedly lied about the terrible policy of ripping children from their mother’s arms at the border, saying that this was a law put in place by the Democrats. The truth is that this is not a law, but actually a policy, written by neo-Nazi Stephen Miller, approved by Trump, and carried out by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Those previous lies are all very typical of the type told multiple times a day by Trump. This next one is slightly less common as it is a direct middle finger to American Veterans, a group Trump has often pretended to care about. Less than two weeks ago, on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in the Rose Garden, Trump made a grand spectacle in an effort to applaud himself for signing the “VA Mission Act” which was touted as a huge healthcare win for Veterans.

That very night, Trump released a statement objecting to three oversight provisions of the bill he had just made such a big deal of signing. Did he tweet about this objection? Of course not, as it was all done as secretly as possible. Trump’s obstruction of his own bill would go even further. His White House sent a memo to Congress to voice his objection to the Senate’s plan to pay for it.

Will Fischer, Iraq war veteran and director of government relations for the group VoteVets, said in a statement “It’s just like Donald Trump to sign a deal, and then not pay for it. So, as he’s done many times in his life, Donald Trump has made a big production, but when it comes to paying, he’s going to leave us high and dry.” Rep. Tim Walz from Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, stated “I am deeply concerned by President Trump’s signing statement,” he told the Federal Insider, “however I do not find it surprising that before the ink was even dry on the VA Mission Act President Trump took steps to limit Congressional oversight of the bill’s implementation.”

Nobody is even the slightest bit stunned by yet another Donald Trump lie these days. At this point, if he said that grass was green, I might be a bit hesitant to even believe that. In his new world of alternative facts it’s more important than ever to fact check what someone, especially Republicans in Congress, are telling their constituents. Some things should always be off limits for such lies, but now, sadly, we see that the lives of American Veterans aren’t even considered sacred.
