Donald Trump lies so frequently, it’s more of an event when he occasionally tells the truth. So we’re not surprised at all by his false new claim that he came to the United Kingdom the day before the Brexit vote and correctly predicted the result. With all the eyes on Trump, it’s easy enough to prove that he was not in the UK the day before the vote. What’s a bit more surprising is that Melania Trump’s spokesperson has doubled down on this and made it even worse.

It started when BBC reporter Jon Sopel posted this: “Bizarre. Donald Trump says he came to Turnberry the day before Brexit and he told everyone that he thought Brexit would happen. And that he predicted correctly what would happen the next day. Umm. Not true. He came the day after Brexit. I was there. June 24.” This prompted Melania’s spokesperson Stephanie Grisham to post this bizarre response: “He did. It actually is true. I was there. June 23.” This set off a feeding frenzy.

Professor Steve Peers chimed in with “This lie is simultaneously petty and easy to disprove, but she insists upon it. Can she not see that such contemptible behaviour is one of the reasons Trump is loathed so much in the UK, US and elsewhere?” He then pointed to Donald Trump’s own tweets from June 24th, 2017, announcing that he had “just arrived in Scotland.” Undeterred by the facts and evidence, Grisham went on to claim that she had “photos” of Trump being there on the 23rd, even though he wasn’t there. Naturally, she didn’t post any such photos.

Melania’s spokesperson never did acknowledge that she’d been caught lying about when Donald Trump was in the UK. Instead she went on to retweet a lie that Sarah Huckabee Sanders had told about CNN.
