Let the idiot celebrate for now
Last night Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced that some unspecified details of the recent Buzzfeed bombshell about Donald Trump and Michael Cohen were inaccurate. Anyone who actually read the statement understands that Mueller was not disputing the fact that Trump told Cohen to lie under oath. Don’t tell that to Trump, who can’t read anyway, and has been celebrating ever since. But don’t worry – Trump isn’t helping himself.
Donald Trump promptly tweeted this in celebratory fashion, as if Mueller’s statement somehow got him off the hook for obstruction, or collusion, or anything else: “A very sad day for journalism, but a great day for our Country!” Then he triumphantly added “Fake News is truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”
Let’s be clear about two things. First, Trump’s spin on this will change precisely zero minds in the long run. We’re a few weeks away from Robert Mueller completing his report about Trump’s endless list of crimes, and once that report directly or indirectly surfaces, the public will focus on that, and not whatever Trump is yelling today.
Second, if Mueller were disputing that Trump told Cohen to lie, he’d have said so in those words, which he did not. Mueller is clearly not disputing the crime; he’s merely cautioning House Democrats not to file articles of impeachment on Monday with the Buzzfeed article as their primary source, because some of the details in the article are off, and the last thing anyone needs is a slightly inaccurate impeachment process.
words
We all know Robert Mueller has Donald Trump nailed on dozens, if not hundreds, of distinct felony counts. Based on his statement, it still looks like Mueller has Trump nailed for telling Cohen to lie as well. So let Trump celebrate for now. He’ll let his guard down, making it easier for Mueller to get to the finish line – and he’s clearly very near it. When Trump gets hit with what he’s about to get hit with, he’ll be even more shocked that it happened.
