Lara Trump’s RNC just stepped in it
When Donald Trump appointed his own daughter in law as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, a lot of pundits said that it meant Trump was going to be able to get away with anything he wanted. But in the real world nothing works that way, and the laws of reality say that you can only get away with what you have the muscle to get away with. Since Trump has almost no muscle these days in general, his “takeover” of the RNC was bound to be a weak and fetid one.
This week the news surfaced that Lara Trump’s RNC was scrapping minority outreach centers as a cost cutting move. But this isn’t the kind of move that a political party, even the Republican Party, can get away with making without instant backlash and damaging headlines.
So sure enough, now the RNC says that it’s keeping the outreach program around, and claiming that it was never planning to get rid of it to begin with. Well okay then. It’s a good reminder that 1) Lara Trump is a political novice who’s going to step in it a lot going forward, and 2) Trump and his family don’t suddenly have magical powers to pull off anything they want just because one of them is a high ranking official in the RNC.
