Donald Trump’s closing message lands with a thud
Every candidate tries to deliver a closing message that sums up his or her candidacy and propels people to the polls. Joe Biden’s closing message is about leadership, competence, patriotism, and repairing the damage and chaos that’s enveloped America these past four years. Donald Trump’s closing message is… something different.
Last night Donald Trump vowed to fire the very popular Dr. Fauci after the election, and then left his supporters stranded after the rally without transportation for the third time in a week. Then Trump went on a rant about Lady Gaga of all people. Today he tweeted “We have more Cases because we have more Testing!”
This isn’t a closing message for anyone but the too-small minority of people who are already in Donald Trump’s corner. He’s spent these past four years doing nothing meaningful to try to expand his coalition, which is why his approval rating has always been low and his 2020 poll numbers have always been weak.
Now, with barely twenty-four hours left in this election, Donald Trump isn’t just failing to court the additional voters he needs; he seems intent on turning them off. Even as Trump self destructs, our job is to spend these final hours voting, reminding and convincing others to vote, and doing everything we can to run up the score.
