Now we know how Donald Trump’s kids are going down
The federal investigation into Donald Trump’s Russia scandal and his other criminal scandals was always going to eventually land on the heads of his kids. One of them was directly involved in colluding with the Russian government during the election. Three of them have played major past or present roles in running the Trump Organization, which is now part of the investigation. But precisely how will his kids be targeted? Now we know the answer.
All we have to do is take a look at this week’s takedown of Donald Trump’s “attorney” Michael Cohen. We’re placing that word in quotation marks, both because a judge is deciding as we speak whether Cohen legally qualifies as an attorney, and because it’s long been widely understood that Cohen is less like a legal advisor to Trump and more like a son to him. If there was any concern that Special Counsel Robert Mueller might be afraid to go after Cohen for that reason, we’re now seeing otherwise – which brings us to Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Donald Trump Jr.
Mueller didn’t directly go after Cohen. Instead he referred it to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, knowing the raid would be approved, but technically keeping his hands off the matter. If Mueller didn’t want the raid to happen, it would not have happened. But it did, and now we know that the Feds aren’t going to use any kid gloves when dealing with those who are personally closest to Donald Trump.
So when Robert Mueller is ready to put the Trump Organization on trial for financial crimes, we can an expect similarly a aggressive approach toward Ivanka, Eric, and Don Jr. Maybe Mueller will once again hand it off to a U.S. Attorney’s office, but it’ll happen. If Mueller isn’t afraid to let the Feds bust down Cohen’s door, he won’t be afraid to let them bust down Trump’s kids’ doors either.
