Kevin McCarthy just managed to out-stupid himself with the 1/6 commission

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

The 1/6 commission investigating the Capitol attack is going to happen whether House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the House Republicans put their names on it or not. So it makes more sense for them to put their names on it, which gives them at least some control over the direction of the probe.

The trouble is, Kevin McCarthy is anything but smart. Worse for him, he’s a key material witness in the probe, given the reported phone conversation between him and Donald Trump while the Capitol was being held under siege. So now he’s panicking in a stupid way, urging House Republicans not to lend their support to the 1/6 commission.

All this does is ensure that McCarthy will have no oversight at all in a probe that’s looking into him. Yes, he really is that stupid. It gets worse for him. It appears McCarthy was baited into panicking like this by none other than Liz Cheney, who just finished calling for the commission to subpoena McCarthy as a witness. We told you Cheney was playing McCarthy like a fiddle.

Here’s the thing. The 1/6 commission isn’t a criminal investigation. It doesn’t have the ability to bring criminal charges or hand out other meaningful punishments. But it will succeed in unearthing all of the dirt in the Capitol attack scandal. And it’s now clear that the commission will unearth whatever McCarthy and Trump were arguing about on the phone during the attack.

By the time this 1/6 commission is done digging it all up, it’s difficult to imagine Kevin McCarthy still being House Republican Leader a year from now. He’ll simply have too much baggage, to the point of being damaged goods. Of course Trump will have been criminally indicted in New York by then, and the House GOP may finally begin panicking about its association with Trump costing it in the midterms, so McCarthy’s eventual replacement at House Republican Leader could end up being… Liz Cheney.

This isn’t necessarily a good thing if you’re rooting for President Biden and the Democrats. Kevin McCarthy is such a hapless buffoon, he’s easily outsmarted and worked around. If the House Republicans end up being led by someone smart and corrupt like Liz Cheney, she’ll find a way to outmaneuver them from time to time. In reality, the longer the Republicans keep McCarthy in charge, the better it probably is for the Democrats.
