Over the past several days, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been publicly and repeatedly assigning blame to Donald Trump for the January 6th U.S. Capitol attack. In response, Trump (through his handlers) issued a statement attacking McConnell and calling for Republicans to abandon him.

Now the stakes have just gotten higher. One Republican county chairman in Kentucky is trying to sabotage Mitch McConnell by calling for him to be ousted as Senate Minority Leader. It’s not yet clear if there will be enough momentum to oust McConnell. But this effort is interesting, for a couple reasons.

As his consistently low approval rating in Kentucky shows, most people there don’t actually like McConnell. They presumably only keep reelecting him because he’s powerful in his role as a Senate leader, and he therefore makes his state relevant on the national political landscape. Yet now at least one Republican leader is looking to throw away that relevance by ousting McConnell from his leader position, just to side with Trump’s ghost. We’ll see where this goes.
