Donald Trump tries to distract from Bill Taylor’s impeachment testimony with bizarre stunt involving Kellyanne Conway
This morning Donald Trump revealed how desperate he was to distract from Bill Taylor’s impeachment testimony when he made the racist and asinine assertion that the impeachment process against him was a “lynching.” As the ugly details of Taylor’s testimony have begun to leak out this afternoon, Trump is now trying a bizarre new stunt as an attempted distraction.
Donald Trump is now floating the idea of firing Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and replacing him with either Kellyanne Conway or Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, according to Bloomberg. It’s no surprise that Trump is looking at replacing Mulvaney, who has spent the past few days failing on an almost hilarious level. But some things about this leak obviously don’t add up.
For starters, even though Donald Trump would probably love to have his corrupt loyalist Steve Mnuchin at his side in the White House every day, the reality is that Mnuchin is abusing his position as Treasury Secretary to protect Trump’s tax returns. If Trump were to yank Mnuchin from the Treasury Department, it would put his tax returns at risk. Because Trump can’t possibly be seriously considering Mnuchin, we’re left to conclude that he’s not serious about Kellyanne Conway either, though at this point Trump’s logic is pretty fractured.
What’s interesting about this leak is that it frames Donald Trump as having spent the past month searching for a replacement for Mick Mulvaney. If feels like an attempt on Trump’s part at rewriting history so it’ll look like he was trying to dump Mulvaney before Mulvaney’s meltdown. No one else cares about this, but the ever narcissistic Trump does. More importantly, this bizarre leak serves as a potential distraction from Bill Taylor’s impeachment testimony today, which is for all the marbles.
