The stock market didn’t drop yesterday, but only because it wasn’t open. Donald Trump has shown a remarkable capacity to make a mess of anything just by opening his mouth about it. The more he talks about the economy and announces real or imagined tariffs, the more the stock market drops, and the more consumer confidence plunges. Trump may be not be able to drive the stock market down on the weekend, but he sure can make a mess of foreign policy.

Trump is now back to insisting that he’s going somehow buy or seize Greenland. He’s still obsessed with this, even after the most vocally anti-Trump political party in Greenland just dominated the country’s elections. Now Trump is running his mouth about how the United States has multiple military bases in Greenland. But in reality there’s only one base. How does the “President of the United States” get that wrong?

The short answer is that he can’t get anything right, because he’s too deep into dementia to have any idea what’s going on, or to retain most of what he’s being told. The more Trump talks about wanting to take over Greenland, the less likely it is to happen. The same goes for Trump’s bizarre Don Quixote-esque obsession with seizing Canada, which has prompted Canadians to push back in remarkably vocal and aggressive fashion.

At this point I’m convinced that the best thing we can do is to just let Trump keep running his mouth. The more he brags about what he’s doing to the federal government and the economy, the more blame he’ll take for the problems he’s causing in those areas. And the more Trump spews nonsense about seizing half of America’s allies, the more Americans will blame him for America’s slipping position in the world.

Donald Trump, in a sense, keeps telling on himself. Not only is he making the worst and most self defeating moves possible, he’s also marrying himself to those moves as loudly as possible. Trump is trying to turn as many Americans against him as possible as quickly as possible. In that sense we might as well root for the dummy to keep it up. He’s damaging himself at least as thoroughly as we’re able to damage him.
