Kamala Harris’ Pick Six
Multiple major news outlets have reported that Kamala Harris will announce her running mate by next Tuesday. According to NBC News, the final six picks are (in no particular order) Josh Shapiro, Mark Kelly, Tim Walz, Pete Buttigieg, JB Pritzker, and Andy Beshear.
At this point, I have to say that I don’t know who she’s going to pick, and I don’t think I really care who she picks. Any of these six names would be an outstanding choice. I could list off positives and negatives about each of these six candidates, but it would all be too subtle to make much of a difference.
Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party have access to the kind of detailed internal polling that you and I don’t get to see. So if this is about who helps the most with a certain state or certain demographic, I’m not in a position to address that. We have to trust that Harris and her people are evaluating that internal data correctly, and that it’ll factor into her pick accordingly.
Ultimately it’s going to matter less who Kamala picks, and it’s going to matter more how quickly and enthusiastically we all rally behind her pick. Many of you have your own preference as to who it should be, and statistically speaking most of you are not going to get your way. It’ll be crucial that everyone resists the urge to say “Here’s why I think she should have picked X instead.” Our messaging needs to be 100% about how great her pick is, whoever it ends up being.
So let’s go win this. We’re being really smart and savvy about how we’ve been getting behind Kamala Harris. Let’s keep doing that once she announces her running mate. If we trust her, then we trust that she’ll make the best pick for herself, for the ticket, and for the nation. Now let’s go win this.
