Donald Trump doesn’t appear to know who Kamala Harris is
With Donald Trump’s scandals closing in on him by the day, his approval rating historically low, and his presidency unraveling, it’s now more likely that 2020 will find him in a prison cell than still in the Oval Office. In a sign of how his increasingly dire prospects are pushing him further into delusion, Trump is now focused on his 2020 reelection campaign, and he’s become obsessed with his potential Democratic opponents. In an even more eye popping reveal, Trump doesn’t appear to know who Senator Kamala Harris is.
Trump is convinced, for seemingly no particular reason, that he can easily defeat the likes of Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, according to a new Politico report (link). He’s also concluded, again for no reason, that Cory Booker will end up not running. But when it comes to another oft-discussed potential 2020 candidate, Trump is at a loss: “When someone in the room brought up California Sen. Kamala Harris, the president seemed not to have her on his radar yet.”
That sounds like Trump doesn’t even know who Harris is. At the very least, he knows nothing about her. This is stunning, considering that she’s being discussed by the media as a potential 2020 candidate roughly as often as the other names mentioned above. Harris famously backed Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions into a stammering corner on live television last summer, when Sessions was testifying about the Russia scandal. We know Trump watches these kinds of televised hearings obsessively – yet he still hasn’t figured out who Kamala Harris is?
This adds further credibility to the notion that Donald Trump may not have known who Senator Dick Durbin was, or that he might not have realized Durbin was a Democrat, when he made his infamous “shithole countries” remark in front of Durbin last week. Durbin is an older white man, so perhaps Trump assumed he was a Republican. Kamala Harris is a non-white woman, so perhaps Trump can’t be bothered to pay attention to her at all.
