Even as other endorsements have been pouring in all week, it was easy enough to understand why President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were waiting to endorse VP Kamala Harris. This was President Biden’s handoff and they didn’t want to step on it. Moreover, it’s always good to time these kinds of high profile endorsements so they get their own news cycle. It also presents the opportunity for your opponent to step in it, which Donald Trump just did.
Yesterday Trump announced that he was pulling out of the remaining scheduled debates. His reasoning: he didn’t think Kamala Harris was going to be the nominee, given that Obama hadn’t endorsed her yet. Did Trump really not see what was going to happen next?
After Trump foolishly staked himself to the position that he’s not willing to debate Harris because Obama hasn’t endorsed her, Obama went ahead and endorsed her this morning. So did Michelle. And so now this weekend’s media narrative will be that Trump has no excuse for refusing to debate Harris, now that his lone stated reason has been wiped out.
